Aussie Skipper Out of Cup Opener, Smith Sri Lanka Bound

Travis Head will captain Australia in their 2026 T20 World Cup opener against Ireland today after Mitch Marsh was ruled out with a serious groin injury. Steve Smith is on his way to Sri Lanka as cover for the men’s T20 captain. Head, who led Australia in the first T20 in Pakistan last month, steps in once again as Marsh undergoes rest and rehabilitation. Marsh’s injury leaves him in doubt for Australia’s second match against Zimbabwe in just two days, with the squad down to just 12 fit players for the Ireland game. Marsh suffered the injury during Sunday’s training session at the Colombo Cricket Club Ground while receiving sidearm throw downs from one of Australia’s assistant coaches, immediately exiting the nets for treatment. Cricket Australia confirmed 15 minutes before the toss that Marsh would miss the match, joining big-hitting star Tim David on the sidelines as he recovers from a hamstring injury. “He is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement,” CA said in a statement. “Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice. Standby player Steve Smith will travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatise and prepare, should he be required.” Smith has not officially been added to Australia’s World Cup squad yet, but a spare spot is available if the team needs to bring him in after opting not to replace Josh Hazlewood in their 15-man group last week. Paceman Sean Abbott is also in Sri Lanka as a travelling reserve. Marsh’s absence comes amid a turbulent lead-up to the ICC T20 showpiece, following Australia’s 3-0 series defeat to Pakistan last month and the pre-tournament losses of star quicks Hazlewood (Achilles) and Pat Cummins (back). The right-hander’s withdrawal means Matthew Renshaw and allrounder Cooper Connolly are likely to make their T20 World Cup debuts, with Renshaw having only played his first T20 international two weeks ago against Pakistan.
