India tightened their grip on the second Test in Colombo after declaring on 503 for nine and reducing Sri Lanka to 8 for two before bad light ended a rain-affected second day at the SSC.
Dhruv Jurel was the star of India’s dominant batting display, producing a composed unbeaten 115 off 177 deliveries to register his second Test century. His innings, built on patience and precision, came at a crucial stage after Sri Lanka had threatened to make inroads into India’s lower order.
Jurel found an ideal partner in Rishabh Pant, who battled through his recent injury concerns to make a brisk 63 off 89 balls. The pair added 112 runs for the seventh wicket, effectively taking the game away from Sri Lanka.
Pant once again took the attack to the bowlers, pulling a short delivery onto the roof of the SSC as India accelerated. Jurel, in contrast, provided the stability, collecting runs through singles and well-timed boundaries while refusing to take unnecessary risks.
India’s progress was briefly slowed after Pant fell to long-off, while Manav Suthar added a valuable 23 in a 39-run partnership with Jurel. Suthar was eventually dismissed by Prabath Jayasuriya, leaving Jurel to shepherd the tail.
Jurel reached his century after a tense wait, taking 21 deliveries to move from 99 to three figures. Once the milestone was reached, India quickly pushed beyond 500 before declaring at 503 for nine.
Sri Lanka were left with little time to respond but the brief passage proved disastrous. Lahiru Udara was caught at gully off Prasidh Krishna for one, before nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya was trapped lbw by Suthar for four.
India’s seamers and spinners had only three overs to work with, but the two early wickets left Sri Lanka staring at an enormous deficit of 495 runs.
Kamil Mishara remained unbeaten on debut when play was finally abandoned for bad light, with Sri Lanka finishing on 8 for two.
India’s total was built around Devdutt Padikkal’s 117 and Jurel’s unbeaten 115, while Asitha Fernando finished with four wickets but was unable to complete what would have been his first five-wicket haul on Sri Lankan soil.
With Sri Lanka already two wickets down and still 495 runs behind, India have placed themselves firmly in command heading into the third day.
