Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign is barely underway, yet it has already delivered a moment that captures the fragile balance between heroism and heartbreak.
Wanindu Hasaranga will undergo an MRI scan today to assess the severity of a hamstring injury sustained during Sri Lanka’s opening World Cup match against Ireland. The leg-spinner felt discomfort after bowling just one over and briefly left the field, sparking immediate concern among team management and fans.
In most cases, that would have marked the end of a player’s involvement. But Hasaranga chose defiance over caution.
Returning to the attack, he completed his full quota of four overs and produced a decisive spell of 3 for 24, a performance that played a central role in Sri Lanka’s 20-run victory. It was a reminder of his immense value — not just as a wicket-taker, but as a big-match performer.
However, the effort may come at a cost. Team sources say Hasaranga, who has battled recurring hamstring issues, will not travel to Kandy for Sri Lanka’s next fixture on February 12 while awaiting medical assessment.
