BREAKING: Hasaranga ruled out of T20 World Cup

Date:

Sri Lanka have suffered a devastating setback in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, with star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after scans confirmed a hamstring injury.

MirrorCricket understands that he has sustained a left hamstring injury which will require at least five to six weeks of rehabilitation, effectively bringing his World Cup to a premature end. The injury was picked up during Sri Lanka’s opening match of the tournament against Ireland, a fixture the co-hosts managed to win but at a heavy cost.

Hasaranga’s absence represents a major blow to Sri Lanka’s title aspirations. Widely regarded as the team’s primary strike bowler and one of the most influential all-rounders in world T20 cricket, his ability to change games with both bat and ball has been central to Sri Lanka’s white-ball strategy in recent years.

The leg-spinner bravely battled through discomfort during the Ireland match, completing his spell despite clearly struggling, underlining his importance to the side and his commitment to the cause. However, subsequent medical assessments and scans have confirmed that the injury is significant enough to rule him out of the remainder of the tournament.

Leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha is expected to be drafted into the squad as Hasaranga’s replacement, subject to formal approval from ICC. While Hemantha offers control and variety, replacing a player of Hasaranga’s stature, experience, and match-winning pedigree will be an enormous challenge.

As of the time of reporting, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) had not issued an official statement regarding Hasaranga’s injury or the proposed squad replacement.

Wanindu Hasaranga Faces1 World Cup Setback After Hamstring Injury

Sri Lanka’s hopes in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup have taken a massive hit, with premier spinner Wanindu Hasaranga potentially missing the rest of the tournament due to a hamstring injury.

Hasaranga sustained the injury during Sri Lanka’s opening fixture against Ireland on Sunday. He was forced to return to the pavilion after just the first over, clutching his hamstring, leaving fans worried about the team’s prospects. Showing immense determination, the star all-rounder returned later to complete his remaining three overs, producing a match-winning performance by picking up 3 wickets for 25 runs, steering Sri Lanka to a thrilling victory.

Despite this heroic effort, Hasaranga underwent an MRI scan on Monday, and the results were far from encouraging. Sources within Sri Lanka Cricket have confirmed that the injury is severe enough to potentially rule him out of the entire World Cup, which would be a major blow to the team’s campaign.

Hasaranga has been one of Sri Lanka’s most potent weapons, both with the ball and with the bat. His absence would leave a significant gap in the team’s bowling attack, putting added pressure on the remaining bowlers to deliver under high stakes.

Sri Lanka will now have to reassess their strategy and options as the tournament progresses. Fans and cricket pundits alike will be eagerly watching for updates on Hasaranga’s recovery, hoping the star all-rounder can return sooner than expected.
