Sri Lanka delivered a statement performance that blended explosive batting and discipline bowling as they registered a crushing 105-run victory over Oman at Pallekele in the Group B World Cup fixture.

After posting a formidable 225 for 5, Sri Lanka never allowed Oman a foothold in what quickly became a one-sided contest. The chase unravelled almost as soon as it began, the asking rate and scoreboard pressure proving far beyond Oman’s reach as they were restricted to 120 for 9.

Oman’s hopes of an improbable pursuit were dented inside the first two overs. Captain Jatinder Singh fell for a solitary run, beaten by Dushmantha Chameera’s pace, before Aamir Kaleem was pinned lbw by Maheesh Theekshana. When Hammad Mirza nicked Chameera behind, Oman slumped to 36 for 3 inside the powerplay, already staring at an uphill climb.

From there, it became a matter of damage limitation. Mohammad Nadeem fought a lone battle with a patient 53 not out from 56 balls, but the required rate ballooned relentlessly as Sri Lanka’s bowlers squeezed from both ends. Brief resistance came from Wasim Ali, whose 27 off 20 balls included three sixes, yet even that burst merely delayed the inevitable.

Theekshana was outstanding in the middle overs, conceding just 11 runs in his four overs while picking up two key wickets, his variations leaving Oman’s batters guessing. Matheesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage backed him up superbly, while sharp fielding accounted for three run-outs as Sri Lanka tightened the noose.

Oman lost wickets in clusters, sliding from 78 for 4 to 100 for 8, the chase losing all momentum long before the final overs. The innings petered out at 120 for 9, sealing a heavy defeat that reflected the gulf between the two sides on the night.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s commanding total had been built on a combination of composure and brutality. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with a measured 61, Pavan Rathnayake injected pace with a scintillating 60 off 28, and captain Dasun Shanaka provided the knockout punch with a blistering 50 from 20 balls, the fastest T20 half century by a Sri Lankan (50 off 19 balls) ensuring Oman were chasing a mountain.

The emphatic win significantly boosts Sri Lanka’s net run rate and sends a clear warning to the rest of Group B: at home conditions, with bat and ball firing in unison, they are a formidable force. Oman, meanwhile, are left to regroup quickly as the margins at this level once again proved unforgiving.
