England kept their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign firmly on track as an unbeaten 63 from Tom Banton guided them to a composed five-wicket victory over Scotland at a floodlit Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Chasing 153 for victory, England reached 155 for five in 18.2 overs to remain in contention for a Super Eights berth, which they can seal with victory over Italy in their final Group C fixture at the same venue on Monday.
Banton, coming into form after managing just four runs across England’s first two matches, anchored the chase with a mature innings, striking the ball cleanly while soaking up early pressure. “I think our full focus was on tonight and then obviously on to Italy in two days’ time,” Banton said. “It’s T20 cricket – a high-risk game. You’ve got to keep backing yourself. Luckily, today was my day.”
England’s pursuit began shakily as the new white ball swung under the lights. Phil Salt fell for two to Brandon McMullen and when Jos Buttler picked out McMullen in the deep, England slipped to 13 for two. The momentum shifted when Jacob Bethell counter-attacked, taking McMullen for a six and two fours, while Mark Watt was dispatched for three towering sixes by Banton in a costly over.
Bethell’s brisk 32 ended with a catch at short fine leg, and captain Harry Brook departed cheaply, but England never lost control. Support from Sam Curran (28) and a brisk cameo from Will Jacks ensured a calm finish with ten balls to spare.
Earlier, England’s bowlers laid the platform after Brook chose to field. Scotland were dismissed for 152, despite a fluent 49 from Richie Berrington. Jofra Archer struck early on his way to 2 for 24, while Adil Rashid’s 3 for 36 sparked a late collapse as Scotland lost seven wickets for 39 runs, leaving England to complete a professional all-round performance.
