SLC Probes Bloomfield’s Controversial Declaration

Date:

Sri Lanka Cricket has initiated an official inquiry into a controversial declaration made by Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club during their Major Club Super Eight fixture against Moors Sports Club at Colts Cricket Ground over the weekend.

The move, described by officials as “unsporty,” has sparked debate within domestic cricket circles, prompting the SLC Tournament Committee to summon captains, coaches, managers, and several players from both sides for an urgent hearing this evening. The objective is to ascertain the circumstances that led to Bloomfield’s puzzling decision to declare their second innings under questionable conditions.

Bloomfield, who had already conceded a significant first innings lead of 93, posted 239 for 6 before declaring. The decision left Moors with a modest target of 147, which they comfortably chased down in just 33 overs to secure a four-wicket victory.

Despite the controversy, there were notable individual performances. Ron Chandraguptha struck a fluent 71, while Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 83. However, it was Ramesh Mendis who played a decisive role for Moors, claiming four wickets and later contributing an unbeaten 25 in a crucial 45-run partnership with Milan Rathnayake.

Moors’ victory sees them return to the top of the Super Eight standings, but the spotlight now firmly rests on the integrity of the game, as SLC seeks clarity on an incident that has cast a shadow over the competition.
