Ellis and Zampa lead Australia to commanding win over Ireland

Date:

Nathan Ellis celebrates the wicket of Curtis Campher, Australia vs Ireland, Colombo, T20 World Cup, February 11, 2026

Australia 182 for 6 (Stoinis 45, Inglis 37, Renshaw 37) beat Ireland 115 (Dockrell 41, Ellis 4-12, Zampa 4-23) by 67 runs

Australia overcame a potentially tricky start to their T20 World Cup campaign to defeat Ireland by 67 runs, thanks to superb bowling performances from Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa, who each picked up four-wicket hauls to bowl Ireland out for 115.

The match had a dramatic prelude, with news arriving just 15 minutes before the toss that captain Mitchell Marsh would be unavailable due to a groin injury sustained earlier in the week. Travis Head stepped in as captain, and with Tim David recovering from a hamstring injury and no replacement named for Josh Hazlewood, Australia went into the match with only 12 available players.

Australia’s innings started shakily when Head was run out in the second over, but a crucial 49-run partnership between Josh Inglis and Cameron Green steadied the ship. Matt Renshaw, a late addition to the squad, and Marcus Stoinis then combined for a vital 61-run partnership off 44 balls, navigating a slow, gripping Colombo pitch to post a competitive 182 for 6. Stoinis’ calm approach, running hard between the wickets, complemented Renshaw’s measured shot selection, showing that Australia’s batting is not solely about big-hitting.

Ireland’s chase never gained momentum. They suffered a huge blow when Paul Stirling retired hurt on the first ball after barely getting off the mark. Nathan Ellis then ran through the top order with clever variations, removing key batters with a mix of pace and deceptive slower balls. Curtis Campher and Ross Adair fell cheaply, and the innings quickly unravelled under relentless pressure.

Adam Zampa complemented Ellis perfectly, working through the middle and lower order to finish with four wickets, ensuring Ireland never threatened to get back into the contest. By the end, Australia’s bowlers had thoroughly outclassed their opposition, with Ellis claiming career-best figures and Zampa’s spin proving unplayable on the slow track.

Early partnerships had set the tone. Inglis and Green attacked the fielding restrictions, striking sixes and pushing the scoring rate above ten an over. Although Australia lost a few wickets in the middle overs, Renshaw and Stoinis’ partnership proved decisive, focusing on running between the wickets and keeping dot balls to a minimum. Stoinis’ late assault, including a towering six off Mark Adair, helped Australia reach a challenging total despite a difficult surface.

Ireland’s chances were further hindered by missed opportunities in the field early on, but Australia’s bowlers capitalised when it mattered. Ellis’ mix of back-of-the-hand slower balls and clever pace variations left the Irish batters guessing, while Zampa’s accuracy and turn prevented any late surge. By the time Australia wrapped up the innings, Ireland were all out for 115, confirming a comprehensive 67-run victory.

This win sets Australia on the right path in their T20 World Cup campaign, proving that even with a depleted squad, they can deliver a polished, all-round performance. Ellis and Zampa’s twin four-wicket hauls were the standout displays, ensuring that Ireland never truly got in the contest, and showing that Australia’s depth in both batting and bowling will be key as the tournament progresses.
