England Endures “Worst Pitch Ever” to Claim Tough ODI Win in Sri Lanka

Date:

England finally tasted one-day international victory in Sri Lanka, but even the five-wicket win could not hide the players’ frustration with the conditions, with Harry Brook calling the pitch the “worst” he had ever played on.

The victory at R. Premadasa Stadium gave Brendon McCullum’s side a rare pocket of breathing space amid post-Ashes pressures and World Cup qualifying concerns, at least until the decider on Tuesday. Yet the surface demanded patience, resilience, and old-school cricketing nous.

In times of trouble, England once again turned to Joe Root. The former captain anchored the chase with a masterly 75, steering England to 223 for 5 while facing a spin-dominated Sri Lankan attack. Root’s innings helped build a crucial 68-run partnership with Ben Duckett for the second wicket, laying the foundation for victory.

“It is nice to get a win away from home on a tough surface,” Brook said. “The pitch was probably the worst pitch I have ever played on. The bowlers did an amazing job to bowl that side out, who are used to these conditions. Joe [Root] is an awesome player and his ability to get off strike and punish the bad balls is awesome.”

Root, while praising the country and its fans, agreed the surface was far from ideal. “I always love coming to Sri Lanka, it is a great country. I have always felt extremely welcomed and enjoy playing here. Nice to get the win on a very difficult surface. You have to take the ball as late as possible. If I am being honest I do not think that is a great wicket for ODI cricket,” he said.

England adapted to the conditions with a historic selection strategy, employing six spin-bowling options—the first time in ODI history for England and only the fifth time by a non-Asian side. Adil Rashid led the way with both the ball and the fielding, including a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Janith Liyanage.

Root added on the tactical adjustments: “We learnt from the mistakes from the first match with bat and ball. We knew we had to maximise the powerplay and build some partnerships. You have to use experience and I have played a lot of cricket in the sub-continent.”

Brook played his part with 42, while Jos Buttler and Will Jacks saw England home with 22 balls remaining. “It is nice to get a win away from home on a tough surface,” Brook reiterated, highlighting the team’s resilience.

The win ended a miserable away run dating back to 2024 and marked a significant response after a bruising opening ODI defeat. On a pitch that tested patience and technique, England showed adaptability, experience, and grit—qualities that may prove crucial in the decider.
