ICC Addresses Delays in Team Departures from T20 World Cup 2026

Date:

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that arrangements are underway to return players, coaches, and support staff home following the conclusion of their campaigns at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, after significant delays caused by disruptions to international air travel.

According to the ICC, the delays were linked to an ongoing crisis in the Gulf region, which has led to widespread complications for global aviation. Airspace closures, missile warnings, rerouting restrictions, and the sudden cancellation or rescheduling of flights have made travel planning extremely challenging. These factors affected both commercial and charter flight operations and were beyond the control of the tournament’s governing body.

The ICC acknowledged the frustration felt by players, team officials, and their families who have been waiting to return home since completing their tournament commitments. Some squads remained in India longer than expected due to uncertainty surrounding travel arrangements. The governing body stated that ensuring the safety and welfare of all involved has been its primary concern throughout the process.

Cricket West Indies earlier confirmed that members of the West Indies squad had experienced prolonged delays while waiting for a charter flight organized by the ICC. The flight was intended to transport both the West Indies and South Africa teams but was repeatedly postponed. After remaining in India for nine days following the completion of their matches, Cricket West Indies decided it was no longer practical to continue waiting for the charter service.

In coordination with the ICC and other partners, Cricket West Indies arranged commercial flights for the squad to ensure the safe return of players and staff. Some members of the team have already departed India, while the remaining players and officials are scheduled to leave on March 10 and March 11.

The ICC confirmed that similar arrangements are being made for the South African contingent. Under the current travel plans, South Africa’s players and staff began departing for home, with all members expected to leave within a 36-hour period. For the West Indies team, nine individuals are already en route to the Caribbean, while the remaining 16 are booked on flights departing India within 24 hours.

The ICC also rejected claims circulating on some media platforms suggesting that the travel arrangements were influenced by factors other than safety and logistics. Officials emphasized that every decision has been guided by feasibility, security considerations, and the welfare of those involved.

Despite the challenges, the ICC said it continues to work closely with airlines, airport authorities, charter operators, and government agencies across multiple countries to finalize travel solutions. Updates will continue to be provided as more teams complete their journeys home.
