India produced a dominant performance with both bat and ball to defeat New Zealand by 96 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. The victory secured India’s third T20 World Cup title and made them the first team to successfully defend the championship. A packed crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed a near-perfect performance as India set up the win with a huge total before their bowlers completed the job with authority.
Explosive start sets the tone
India’s innings was built on an aggressive start from their opening pair. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson came out with attacking intent and immediately put pressure on the New Zealand bowling attack.
After a relatively quiet first couple of overs, the scoring rate accelerated quickly. Abhishek Sharma began to find his range against the seamers, striking powerful boundaries straight down the ground and over the leg side. His aggressive approach helped India seize control of the powerplay.
Abhishek raced to 52 off 21 balls, bringing up a rapid half century that laid the platform for a huge total. Alongside him, Sanju Samson provided both stability and attacking stroke play as the pair built a crucial partnership that pushed India ahead early in the contest.
Samson leads the charge
Even after the early breakthrough, India maintained their momentum. Ishan Kishan joined Samson at the crease and the pair continued to attack the New Zealand bowlers.
Samson played a superb innings of 89 off 46 balls, combining clean hitting with calculated placement around the field. He regularly cleared the boundary and kept the run rate high during the middle overs.
Kishan added further firepower with 54 off 25 balls, scoring quickly and ensuring there was no slowdown in India’s innings. The duo’s partnership helped India cross the 200 run mark with several overs still remaining.
New Zealand managed to pull things back slightly when James Neesham struck in the latter stages of the innings. Neesham finished with 3 for 46, picking up key wickets that briefly slowed India’s scoring. However, the damage had already been done as India finished strongly to post an imposing 255 for 5 in 20 overs.
New Zealand struggle in the chase
Chasing a daunting target of 256, New Zealand needed a strong start from their top order. Although there were a few early attacking strokes, India’s bowlers quickly gained control of the match.
Wickets fell at regular intervals and New Zealand struggled to build partnerships against India’s disciplined bowling attack. The required run rate continued to climb as the pressure increased.
Tim Seifert was the only batter who managed to provide significant resistance. He scored 52 runs, attempting to keep New Zealand in the contest with aggressive shots. However, the rest of the batting lineup found it difficult to counter India’s bowling.
Bumrah leads the bowling effort
India’s bowling attack delivered a clinical performance to seal the victory. Jasprit Bumrah led the way with an outstanding spell that effectively ended New Zealand’s hopes of chasing the target.
Bumrah finished with remarkable figures of 4 for 15, using his variations and control to dismantle the middle and lower order. His wickets came at crucial moments and ensured New Zealand never came close to the required run rate.
With regular breakthroughs and tight bowling, India eventually bowled New Zealand out well short of the target to secure a comprehensive victory.
Historic achievement
The win marked another milestone for Indian cricket. By lifting the trophy again, India became the first team to win three ICC Men’s T20 World Cup titles and also the first to successfully defend the championship.
It was a complete team performance that highlighted India’s strength in both batting depth and bowling quality. The emphatic margin of victory underlined their dominance on the biggest stage.
