Injury-hit Sri Lanka confident ahead of Super 8 clash with England

Date:

Sri Lanka head into their Super 8 opener against England at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium tomorrow with a challenge: a bowling line-up missing two of its key stars. Fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar spoke openly about the impact of injuries and the team’s hopes for the remainder of the tournament.

“Wanindu Hasaranga’s injury in the first game against Ireland was unexpected. Everyone knows the quality he brings as a bowler and all-rounder,” Sridhar said. “Pathirana’s absence is another blow; his pace and variations make him lethal. These are big shoes to fill, but we’ve got players like Pramod and Dilshan Madhushanka who have the experience of big games, and I back them to come good under crucial moments.”

Sridhar also reflected on past games against England in Sri Lanka, where the team struggled but learned important lessons. “We were bundled out for 133 in the first game, but in the next, we posted 180–190. The team has seen different situations and knows how to react to England’s big hitters. Even with a slightly depleted bowling attack, we have plans in place and will rely on our bowlers to execute them with clarity.”

He was quick to downplay any psychological edge England might have from their 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka. “At this stage of the tournament, the pressure is equal for both sides. Teams that perform well under pressure and make fewer mistakes will progress.”

Top-order batter Kusal Perera remains a key asset. “Kushal is a pro who can handle pace and spin, and he can challenge England’s top spinners after the powerplay. He’ll play a crucial role.”

On the pitch and fielding, Sridhar stressed fundamentals. “The outfield isn’t perfect, so it’s back to basics—body behind the ball, backing up teammates, executing simple skills well. That’s how we stay competitive even under pressure.”

Despite injuries and an altered attack, Sri Lanka remain confident in their ability to challenge one of the world’s strongest teams. “We can only play with the cards we are dealt. But I trust our players to step up and perform when it matters most,” Sridhar concluded.
