SLC revise national player contracts with fresh bonuses and fines

Date:

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has revised its national player contracts, introducing a more selective bonus structure that limits “series win” incentives to victories against the world’s top four ranked teams, a notable shift from the previous system, which extended rewards down to the ninth-ranked side. The board confirmed that the updated contracts will be presented to players within the next fortnight.

Under the new contracts, Test series victories against elite opposition carry significant financial rewards. A triumph over the No.1 ranked team will fetch players a collective bonus of USD 150,000, decreasing incrementally to USD 105,000, USD 75,000, and USD 60,000 for wins against teams ranked second, third, and fourth respectively.

However, SLC has introduced a clear distinction between home and away performances. While overseas series wins command the full bonus, rewards for home series have been scaled down considerably. For instance, a home series win against the top-ranked side will now earn USD 100,000, with bonuses tapering to USD 75,000, USD 50,000, and USD 25,000 against the next three ranked teams.

A similar tiered structure has been implemented for One Day Internationals, again with a marked disparity between home and away incentives. An overseas ODI series win against the No.1 ranked team will bring in USD 150,000, but only half that amount will be paid for a comparable success at home. Victories against the second-ranked side are valued at US 100,000 abroad and USD 50,000 domestically, while wins over third and fourth-ranked teams on foreign soil will yield USD 80,000 and USD 70,000 respectively, with home series bonuses reduced by half.

In Twenty20 Internationals, however, SLC has opted for a uniform system irrespective of venue. Series wins against the top four ranked teams will earn USD 75,000, USD 50,000, USD 40,000, and USD 35,000 respectively, whether achieved at home or away.

The revised contracts also introduce a punitive element, with a proposed 10 percent salary deduction from match fees for series defeats across all formats, a move clearly aimed at fostering a results-driven culture.

Match fees themselves have been recalibrated to align with performance outcomes. In Test cricket, players will receive USD 15,000 for a win, USD 10,000 for a draw, and USD 7,500 for a loss or no result. In ODIs, a victory will earn USD 7,500, while defeats and no-results will bring in USD 3,500 and USD 3,000 respectively. T20I match fees stand at USD 5,000 for a win, USD 2,500 for a loss, and USD 2,000 for abandoned or no-result games.

Beyond match and series incentives, players will continue to benefit from a range of additional earnings, including annual contract retainers, tour fees, daily allowances, sponsorship-related income, and performance-based ranking bonuses. SLC will also pay special incentives tied to ICC rankings, offering a one-time payment of USD 25,000 for achieving the No.1 position in any format, while players ranked between second and fifth will receive USD 20,000.

Captains, meanwhile, will be entitled to supplementary match payments, earning an additional USD 1,000 per completed Test or ODI, and USD 500 per T20I, in recognition of their leadership responsibilities.
