Vikram Rathour hails Nissanka’s century against Australia as one of the greatest T20 knocks

Date:

Sri Lanka’s consultant batting coach Vikram Rathour has hailed Pathum Nissanka’s World Cup century against Australia as one of ‘the best T20 knocks you will ever see’.

Speaking ahead of the team’s final Group B game against Zimbabwe on Thursday, the former Indian batting coach said Sri Lanka produced an almost perfect batting performance against Australia on Monday, drawing praise from critics, but stressed the need to deliver such performances more consistently.

Nissanka was in sublime form, compiling a match-winning 100 off 52 balls that left observers in awe of the diminutive opener, while Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with commendable maturity.

‘It was almost the perfect batting performance,’ Rathour said. ‘Pathum played one of the best T20 knocks you will ever see. Kusal Mendis has been doing that for us time and again. Pavan Rathnayake was good as well. Everything went to plan and it was a really good game. We have good players. On certain days we have played to our full potential, and now we need to be more consistent.’

Sri Lanka have cruised through the tournament so far, winning all three matches they have contested. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, qualified with two wins and one washout.

‘We have had three good games. There have not really been any major issues with the batting. Some games were better than others, but overall we have played well. Right now, our focus is on preparing properly. We have played three good games so far and hopefully there are a few more to come,’ he added.

‘Confidence comes with results. As players and as a team, you need belief, and self-esteem is important. Even if Pathum Nissanka scores two ducks, he is still a terrific player. That fact will not change. If we can maintain belief in ourselves, we will be fine.’

Commenting on Zimbabwe, Rathour said the African side had impressed during the competition.

‘Zimbabwe have played a really good tournament so far. They have a decent bowling unit. We need to play to our potential and stick to our strengths. I am not too concerned about opposition bowlers. If we have clarity and stick to our plans, that is what matters.’

He also spoke warmly about head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, praising his openness and support.

‘He has been very kind with his words. He has given us a lot of space to work and has been very welcoming of our ideas. Given his stature in the team and the country, that feels really good.’
