After lengthy absences from the longest format, West Indies and Sri Lanka will finally return to Test cricket when they begin their two-match Sobers-Tissera Trophy series in Antigua on Thursday, with both teams eager to prove they remain relevant in the modern Test landscape.
For Sri Lanka, the opening Test marks their first appearance in the format in exactly a year. West Indies have not played a Test since December 2025. Their prolonged inactivity underlines the growing disparity in international cricket, where nations with smaller commercial footprints are afforded far fewer opportunities than the game’s financial powerhouses.
Sri Lanka have been allocated just 12 Tests in the current 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle – the minimum permitted. West Indies will play 15, including one non-WTC fixture against Afghanistan. While both nations possess rich Test histories, their schedules reflect the harsh realities of modern cricket economics rather than their contribution to the game.
Yet this series presents an opportunity for both sides to make a statement. Sri Lanka have consistently occupied the middle tier of the WTC standings, finishing seventh, fifth and sixth in the previous three cycles. West Indies have struggled more, ending eighth on each occasion and still searching for their first victory of the current championship campaign after seven defeats and a draw.
Recent form offers little guidance. With so few Tests played, both teams are effectively starting afresh. Players will need to rediscover the rhythms of red-ball cricket, while captains Dhananjaya de Silva and Roston Chase will be tasked with ensuring their sides adapt quickly.
The spotlight will inevitably fall on veteran West Indies seamer Kemar Roach, who is just six wickets away from becoming only the fifth West Indies fast bowler to reach the landmark of 300 Test wickets. Such an achievement would place him alongside Caribbean greats including Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose and Malcolm Marshall.
For Sri Lanka, much rests on the shoulders of skipper Dhananjaya de Silva. One of the strongest advocates for more Test cricket for Sri Lanka, Dhananjaya now has the chance to lead by example. A successful series could provide valuable momentum as Sri Lanka seek to mount a serious challenge in the WTC standings.
Conditions at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium are expected to favour seam bowling, with dry weather forecast throughout the match. That could bring Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando and the West Indies pace trio of Roach, Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph into prominence.
Historically, encounters between the two teams in the Caribbean have been closely contested. Over the past decade, each side has won one Test, with three matches ending in draws.
After months away from the format, both teams now have a chance to remind the cricket world why they deserve a greater place in Test cricket’s future.
