World Cup Shake Up as de Silva Dropped, Kamindu Handed Lifeline

Date:

Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup plans have taken a decisive turn with Dhananjaya de Silva losing his place in the squad following another underwhelming outing with the bat. The selectors have opted to replace him with Kamindu Mendis, a move that underlines the urgency surrounding Sri Lanka’s preparations for the global tournament.

De Silva’s return to the T20 side was seen as an opportunity for the experienced right-hander to reassert his value in the shortest format. However, the comeback failed to deliver the desired results. His struggles culminated in the opening T20I against England, where he managed just 11 runs off 12 deliveries as Sri Lanka went down by 11 runs. It was a knock that lacked both fluency and intent, at a time when the side desperately needed stability through the middle order.

With the World Cup fast approaching, the selectors appear to have reached the end of their patience. Consistency and impact, particularly with the bat, have become non negotiable, and de Silva’s inability to provide either has cost him dearly. His omission effectively shuts the door on his immediate World Cup ambitions.

In contrast, Kamindu Mendis has been handed a lifeline. The left hander was earlier axed from the ongoing series against England, a decision that seemed to cast doubt over his place in the bigger picture. However, his recall now signals a renewed faith in his versatility and temperament. Kamindu’s ability to bat across positions and his calm approach under pressure are qualities the selectors clearly believe could prove valuable in tournament conditions.

The move reflects a broader shift in Sri Lanka’s selection mindset. Experience alone is no longer enough. Performances, particularly in high pressure situations, are now the defining currency. As the countdown to the T20 World Cup continues, the message from the selectors is clear. Opportunities are limited, and only those who seize them will make the final cut.
