GOVERNMENT HINTS AT MAJOR SHAKE-UP AFTER WORLD CUP HUMILIATION

Date:

“You love cricket. I love cricket. The majority of our people love cricket. The President loves cricket.”

With those words, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa signalled that sweeping changes could be on the horizon for Sri Lanka’s cricket administration following the national team’s crushing World Cup exit.

Sri Lanka crashed out of the tournament after losing all their Super Eights matches, a humiliation that has ignited public outrage and intensified calls for accountability within Sri Lanka Cricket. The defeats, suffered on home soil, have left fans heartbroken and the once-proud cricketing nation searching for answers.

Jayatissa made it clear that the government is prepared to act.

“Actions will be taken to fulfil the aspirations of all those who love this game. Required changes to laws and administrative structures will be done,” he assured.

The strong remarks come amid mounting pressure on the cricket board to resign, with many urging President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to intervene decisively to restore the lost pride of Sri Lanka cricket.

For a country where cricket is more than just a sport, where it represents identity, emotion and a unifying force, this World Cup collapse has cut deep. Generations have grown up celebrating iconic triumphs, and the national team’s struggles have therefore been felt far beyond the boundary ropes.

Critics argue that the current crisis goes beyond performance on the field, pointing to concerns over governance, transparency, selection policies and long-term planning. Calls for reform have included proposals to overhaul administrative structures, introduce stronger oversight mechanisms and modernise domestic cricket pathways.

The government’s promise of legal and administrative reforms suggests it is ready to step beyond rhetoric and into action. Whether this leads to genuine structural transformation or merely another reshuffle remains to be seen.

One thing, however, is certain. Patience has run out. The fans demand accountability. The nation demands revival. And the game demands leadership worthy of its legacy.
