Kusal Janith Perera, Nuwan Thushara Left Out of Sri Lanka’s England T20 Squad

Date:

Batter Kusal Janith Perera and seamer Nuwan Thushara have been omitted from Sri Lanka’s 16-man squad for the three-match T20I series against England later this month, a decision that all but ends their prospects of featuring in the home T20 World Cup scheduled for February.

For Kusal Janith, the exclusion comes as little surprise. Although named in the extended 18-man squad for the recently concluded series against Pakistan, the left-hander never broke into the playing XI. That silence from the selectors was telling. Once a proven match-winner at the highest level, capable of altering contests in a matter of overs, Kusal Janith now finds himself on the fringes. In a format that demands relentless intent, consistency and peak fitness, the selectors appear to have drawn a clear line, opting to look ahead rather than lean on past achievements.

Thushara’s omission, meanwhile, has been driven squarely by performance. The seamer featured in the opening T20I against Pakistan but endured a difficult outing, conceding 31 runs from just two overs. More troubling than the numbers was the lack of control, with his execution faltering under pressure. With several fast bowlers competing for limited places, inconsistency has proven costly, leaving Thushara outside both the England series and, potentially, the World Cup picture.

The remainder of the squad that faced Pakistan has largely been retained, signalling a desire for continuity as Sri Lanka fine-tune combinations ahead of the global event. However, places are far from secure. Leg spinner Dushan Hemantha remains under scrutiny despite his impressive 3 for 38 against Zimbabwe in September 2025, while Traveen Mathew retains his spot despite not featuring against Pakistan.

As co-hosts of the ICC T20 World Cup alongside India, Sri Lanka will hope familiarity with conditions works in their favour. Yet history tempers expectation. Inconsistency has long undermined their global campaigns.

The England series, therefore, serves as a final proving ground. The message from the selectors is unmistakable: reputation alone will not suffice. Only consistent performance will earn a place when the World Cup spotlight arrives.
