Sri Lanka use England ODIs to plug gaps and test depth

Date:

Sri Lanka’s ODI squad for the three-match series against England reflects a selection strategy driven less by experimentation and more by urgency. With form fluctuating and depth still uncertain in key areas, the selectors have opted for a squad designed to address immediate deficiencies while quietly keeping one eye on the demands of global tournaments ahead.

The recall of Dhananjaya de Silva is central to that thinking. After a prolonged absence from the 50-over format, de Silva has been thrust back into the ODI fold, not as a sentimental returnee but as a stabilising option in a middle order that has often struggled to control tempo. His last ODI appearance came at the 2023 World Cup, yet selectors appear convinced that his calm presence, tactical awareness and secondary bowling option outweigh concerns over recent exposure.

Against England, Sri Lanka will need batters who can absorb pressure as well as rotate strike, and de Silva offers exactly that. While his recent T20 outings have been solid rather than spectacular, his value lies in balance rather than explosiveness. In a side prone to extremes, that balance has been sorely missing.

That recalibration has come at the expense of Kusal Janith Perera, whose omission signals a shift away from one-dimensional selections. The left-hander’s absence suggests that adaptability and role clarity now trump reputation. It is a decision that underlines a broader theme: selectors are no longer accommodating specialists unless they fit into a clearly defined structure.

In contrast, Dushmantha Chameera’s absence is rooted in preservation rather than preference. Nursing a groin injury, the fast bowler has been rested with the immediate focus on ensuring his availability for the upcoming T20 assignment. Given Sri Lanka’s reliance on his pace and aggression, caution has prevailed over short-term gain.

Several fringe players have also fallen away as the selectors tighten the group. Lahiru Udara, Nuwanidu Fernando, Sahan Arachchige, Sonal Dinusha and Tharindu Ratnayake have all missed out, while Pavan Rathnayake’s retention indicates a willingness to persist with youth even in the absence of extended opportunities.

The inclusion of Milan Rathnayake hints at forward planning within a pragmatic framework. Though his lone ODI outing yielded little, the selectors appear keen to assess whether he can evolve into a dependable all-round option in the longer format.

Spin remains Sri Lanka’s strongest currency, with Wellalage, Vandersay, Theekshana and Hasaranga forming a potent core, though Hasaranga is expected to be used sparingly. Meanwhile, Lahiru Kumara’s latest injury setback has opened the door for Eshan Malinga, reinforcing the reality that availability is becoming as important as ability.

Ultimately, this England series is less about statements and more about solutions. For Sri Lanka, it is a chance to steady a format that has often lurched between promise and collapse, and to identify players capable of delivering under sustained pressure.

ODI squad for England series:
Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrema, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka (Captain), Janith Liyanage, Kamindu Mendis, Pavan Rathnayake, Dunith Wellalage, Jeffrey Vandersay, Wanindu Hasaranga, Milan Rathnayake, Eshan Malinga, Pramod Madushan, Maheesh Theekshana, Asitha Fernando
