Root Returns to Lead England as Stokes Dropped Amid Curfew Investigation

Date:

England have made the stunning decision to drop Test captain Ben Stokes from the squad for the second Test against New Zealand National Cricket Team, with former skipper Joe Root set to return as interim captain.

The move comes after Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were stood down pending an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board into an incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning following England’s victory at Lord’s.

Despite vice-captain Harry Brook being next in line, England have opted for the experience of Root, who captained the side in a record 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022. The 35-year-old resigned from the role after a difficult period that saw England win just one of their final 17 Tests under his leadership.

Since stepping down, Root has flourished as a batsman under Stokes’s captaincy and has enjoyed arguably the finest form of his career. His return to the leadership role was considered unlikely until the latest controversy forced England into an unexpected change.

The incident has raised eyebrows because England’s curfew policy was reintroduced with strong backing from Stokes himself. The regulations were implemented following a separate late-night incident involving Brook during the Ashes tour, which led to the introduction of a stricter code of conduct.

Reports indicate that Stokes and Atkinson remained out after midnight following the Lord’s Test victory. During the evening, an altercation allegedly occurred involving Saracens academy rugby player Totoa Auvaa, leaving England security guard James Shaw requiring stitches after attempting to intervene.

England director of cricket Rob Key is expected to address the media regarding the situation, while Stokes has reportedly returned to his home in the North East to consider his future. According to reports, the all-rounder has even contemplated stepping away from England cricket in the wake of the controversy, although no decision has been made.

Meanwhile, England face the challenge of replacing Stokes’s influence both as captain and all-rounder. Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been recalled to the squad, while Jordan Cox also earns a place in the group.

With the series against New Zealand finely poised, England will now look to Root’s calm leadership as they attempt to navigate one of the most unexpected captaincy changes in recent Test history.
