SLC Moves to Regulate Player Representation with Accreditation System for Player Managers

Date:

In a significant step towards strengthening governance and professionalism in cricket, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has finally moved to introduce a formal accreditation framework for player managers, inviting applications from qualified individuals and business entities to become officially recognised Player Managers.

The initiative marks a long-awaited effort to regulate a sector that has operated largely without a structured framework in Sri Lanka, despite the growing commercialisation of the game and the increasing involvement of player agents in contract negotiations, endorsements and career management.

According to an announcement issued by SLC, applications are open to Sri Lankan citizens as well as registered companies, partnerships and other business entities seeking accreditation to represent, advise, negotiate and manage the affairs of Sri Lankan cricketers at international, national and domestic levels.

The governing body said the accreditation programme is intended to ensure that players have access to competent, professional and accountable representatives who operate within clearly defined standards and regulations.

Under the proposed framework, accredited player managers will receive official recognition from SLC and be eligible to represent centrally contracted cricketers in accordance with board regulations. They will also be included in an approved pool from which players may select their preferred representatives based on experience, competence and services offered.

The accreditation will further allow managers to negotiate and enter into commercial arrangements on behalf of players, including sponsorship deals, endorsements, management fees and commission-based agreements, subject to applicable regulations.

SLC has outlined a stringent set of eligibility requirements. Applicants must possess at least three years of experience in areas such as sports management, player representation, legal practice, marketing, finance or business administration. They are also expected to demonstrate financial integrity, have no record of professional misconduct or criminal convictions, and possess adequate knowledge of ICC and SLC regulations, anti-corruption protocols and conflict-of-interest requirements.

In addition, all applicants will be subject to background verification, integrity assessments and other due diligence processes before accreditation is granted.

The board has fixed the initial accreditation fee at USD 500, with an annual renewal fee of USD 250. Accreditation will remain subject to periodic reviews and annual assessments, and SLC retains the authority to suspend, revoke or refuse renewal if requirements are not met.

Importantly, SLC has clarified that accreditation merely recognises a player manager and does not guarantee that players will engage their services. Players will remain free to appoint or terminate managers at their own discretion.

The move is being viewed as a positive development for Sri Lankan cricket, where concerns have often been raised about unregulated intermediaries operating around players without proper oversight or accountability. By establishing minimum professional standards and a formal vetting process, SLC hopes to create a more transparent environment for player representation while protecting the interests of cricketers.

Applications are open until June 21, 2026, and shortlisted candidates will undergo interviews and further assessments before receiving accreditation.

For many observers, this is a case of Sri Lanka Cricket finally bringing structure and accountability to an area of the game that has long operated in a grey zone. As player contracts, sponsorships and commercial opportunities continue to expand, the accreditation of player managers could prove to be an important step in ensuring that players receive professional guidance while maintaining the integrity of the sport
