Tamim Iqbal appointed Bangladesh cricket chief

Date:

The Bangladesh government has appointed Tamim Iqbal as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board after dissolving the Aminul Islam-led board of directors on Tuesday, following recommendations from an investigation committee that examined last October’s controversial board elections. 🏏

At just 37, Tamim becomes the youngest president in BCB history, ushering in a significant leadership shift at a time when Bangladesh cricket faces mounting administrative and performance-related challenges. He will head an 11-member ad-hoc committee tasked with stabilising governance and restoring confidence in the board.

The committee includes former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin and former national cricketer-turned-commentator Athar Ali Khan, alongside Rashna Imam, Mirza Yeasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Tanjil Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam and Fahim Sinha.

The government’s move followed the findings of a five-member inquiry panel, which raised concerns over the legitimacy of the previous board election. Speaking at a press briefing, National Sports Council sports director Mohammed Aminul Ahesan stated that authorities had already informed the International Cricket Council about the dissolution of the board.

He noted that the National Sports Council had concluded that the board “was not formed in a proper manner” and therefore could not effectively discharge its responsibilities. Officials expressed optimism that the ICC would support the decision, emphasising the council’s role in overseeing sports administration in Bangladesh.

The development comes amid growing turmoil within the BCB. Former president Aminul Islam had indicated only days earlier that he intended to remain in office despite pressure from the sports ministry and an ongoing probe into allegations of malpractice and abuse of power during the election process.

The board had also faced criticism over Bangladesh’s absence from the recent T20 World Cup, allegations of political interference, and claims of favouritism in administrative decisions. The instability deepened further when four directors resigned last week, bringing the total number of resignations since January to six.

Tamim’s appointment now marks a new chapter for Bangladesh cricket. Known for his leadership credentials and long-standing influence in the national setup, he faces the immediate task of restoring administrative order while rebuilding trust among stakeholders. The success of this interim committee could prove crucial in determining the future governance structure of Bangladesh cricket. ⚖️

With reforms expected and scrutiny continuing, all eyes will be on Tamim and his team as they attempt to steer the BCB through one of its most turbulent phases.
