Veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is likely to miss the first two weeks of IPL 2026 after suffering a calf strain, with Chennai Super Kings confirming that the former India captain is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
The development comes as a significant early setback for CSK, who begin their campaign on Monday against Rajasthan Royals before facing Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals in the opening fortnight. Dhoni’s absence leaves a leadership vacuum behind the stumps and forces the franchise to reshuffle their combinations.
New marquee recruit Sanju Samson is the frontrunner to don the wicketkeeping gloves while also opening the batting alongside skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK, however, have backup options in Urvil Patel and rookie Kartik Sharma, both of whom impressed in domestic cricket. Kartik, in particular, attracted attention for his power-hitting exploits, while Urvil was retained after a brief but impactful stint last season.
Dhoni featured in all 14 matches in 2025, largely batting in the closing overs. He scored 196 runs from 13 innings at a strike rate of 135.17, with a highest score of 30 not out. Despite his contributions, CSK endured a disappointing campaign, finishing bottom of the table with just four wins.
The franchise has also been hit by the loss of Australian pacer Nathan Ellis, ruled out with a hamstring injury. Spencer Johnson has been drafted in as replacement, joining a pace unit led by Matt Henry.
CSK will now hope to navigate the early phase without their talisman, while fans await Dhoni’s return to spark a revival in fortunes.
